HISTORY 1031 ONLINE - FASTTRACK

WHAT DO I DO IN THIS CLASS?

It's simple enough.  Go to the course toolbar and find the link for "Lectures-Camtasia" or "Lectures-Panopto." That's your class.  Those two links will take you to the lectures that make up the body of the course.  Chose either Panopto or Camtasia, click on the links, and start taking notes.  Every so often you'll come to the end of a section and have a test.  Take good notes as you go, study as you go, and when the test approaches, you'll be ready.

The lectures?  They're in the correct order.  Just go down the list.  They'll even tell you when you reach the last one before a test.

Some of the lectures are written, rather than streamed.  Be sure to read and study those as well!

Some people prefer Panopto because it has captions.

Keep up!  This is a fasttrack class, so it has a lecture a day.  Try not to fall behind!

SO IT'S JUST LECTURES?

No, you've also got two books to read - Would You Eat Your Cat? and The Narrative of Frederick Douglass.  Both of these have to be read completely, and both have a test as well.

TEST? HOW DO I KNOW IF THEY'RE OPEN OR CLOSED?

Easy enough.  The dates when tests are open and closed are on the Syllabus and again on the calendar.  You'll also receive a warning announcement before an exam is about to close.  You get a lot of time to take tests in this class.  They're usually open for weeks, even months.  And, if you follow the lecture schedule that's on the calendar, you'll always have time after a section ends to get ready for the test.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON TESTS?

Expect them to be computer-based, first of all.  And to be taken in a testing center with a proctor.  The testing center doesn't necessarily have to be in Victoria.  Any college or university testing center will do.  The exams are password-protected and cannot be taken at home.

Expect multiple-choice/true-false questions on all exams and book tests except Would You Eat Your Cat?  The Cat test has some writing.

Expect a bonus quiz after every lecture exam.  Bring your notes to the testing center for lecture exams.  After you're done with the test, close it out, got get your notes, and take the bonus quiz.  If you've got good notes, you'll get bonus points for correct answers - up to five points per exam.

WHAT IF I MISS A TEST?

Well, quite honestly, you're going to be in trouble.  This class does not have a makeup option.  Because the tests are open for weeks, it's rather understood that the makeup period is built into the test itself.

You can protect yourself from missing a test by not waiting until the last day.  If you wait until the last couple of days and then meet with an unfortunate set of circumstances, you may miss the test.  If you do, you will not have the option to re-take or extend the test.

Help yourself!  Test early, within a few days after a section closes.  Don't wait around.

Remember, though you'll be able to see the tests on the course toolbar, if you click on them, they'll be blocked by a password.  All tests must be taken in a testing center with a proctor.

ANYTHING ELSE?  IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

I suppose so.  Let's see:

Read your syllabus, as there are hidden things in there that can help you in the class.

Use the study guide, which is here on this website under HISTORY 1301.  There are all kinds of things that can help you under that link.  Chase the pages around and see what you find.  There's a full study guide for all the lectures and books.  There are quizzes to help you figure out if your notes are sufficient.  There are video games and memorization videos as well.

When you see "Related Websites" on the course toolbar, don't worry about learning all that information.  It's just that history is interesting, and those are interesting websites that I thought you'd like to see.  They're not on the tests or anything.

Pay attention to your attendance.  Remember to log in and listen to a lecture at least once a week or risk being dropped from the class.  The full attendance policy is on the course toolbar.  It's worth knowing.
